Growing up in a dysfunctional home, Debra had never learned how to deal with people. As an adult, she kept others at arm’s length and used alcohol to numb her painful loneliness.

In a conflict with her boss, Debra snapped and quit her job, beginning a downward spiral that left her living under a bridge in the middle of winter. She lost five toes to frostbite.

At UGM, Debra found safe shelter, food, and time to work through the unhealthy thoughts and fears that kept her stuck in isolation. Now, she has friends who support her, not strangers to avoid.

“UGM saved my life. I really believe that.”
